Now that the dust is starting to settle from the Election the media and country will switch its attention to The World Cup. Along with the biggest sporting tournament in the world will come the dreaded 'World Cup Fever'. Rather than companies worried about 'sickies' it is an opportunity for them to jump on the bandwagon and get the most from employees.
Setting guidelines before the tournament starts on the 11th of June is important; for example reminding staff of notice required for holiday or laying down rules around internet usage to check scores. Asda have already announced that 'employees from the boardroom to the shop floor will be able to rearrange their shifts around different games provided they can find the appropriate level of cover'. It may be an idea for firms to temporarily relax rules such as removing the cap for the number of employees allowed to be off at the same time.
Whilst the feel good factor sweeps the Nation it is important for companies to capitalise on this where possible. An idea may be to incentivise productivity by offering an early finish for the Slovenia game (23rd of June 3pm), or allowing staff to wear the shirt of their nation on match days. In our industry it is also a great ice breaker when cold calling (unless of course the prospect happens to detest football and is fed up of their favourite soap being moved!).
So here's to a successful World Cup summer and a possible baby boom in 9 months time... just when the extended paternity laws come into play!
